In soccer, a high shock absorption is necessary to provide both comfort, while running on the pitch, and protection, when falling on the pitch. Therefore a traditional synthetic turf soccer pitch consists of sand and rubber filled turf.

For example a pile height of 2.36 inch filled with approximately 10 mm of sand (at the bottom) and 30 mm of rubber (at the top), gives a Gmax of 65%. However, to keep this Gmax that high, it is necessary to maintain the infill, because when the rubber compacts, the Gmax will decrease to approximately 50%.

A challenge with this kind of traditional pitches (caused by the high rubber amount) is the high deformation and low-foot stability. This keeps the player from achieving the best performance!

With, for example, the ProPlay-Sport20, only about 10 mm of rubber infill is needed, instead of 30 mm, to give a Gmax of approximately 65% and a deformation of only 9 mm.

As you can see, with ProPlay-Sport shock pads both problems can be solved; less rubber infill is needed to achieve the necessary Gmax, deformation and sufficient foot stability.

Lateral pitch drainage
A traditional synthetic turf soccer pitch has a permeable sub-base with a drainage (pipe) system at its base. However, lateral draining synthetic turf pitches are becoming more popular because of lower building costs. ProPlay-Sport shock pads already have a very high (water) permeability and the specification for water infiltration rate of a shock pad is exceeded by more than 100 times. But during a heavy rainfall, even a standard ProPlay-Sport shock pad will not be able to drain the pitch laterally. To guarantee a dry pitch during heavy or even violent rainfall (with an intensity of 50 mm/h), ProPlay-Sport23D is equiped with in-plane drainage channels at the bottom of the pad. This 'shock and drainage' pad has a maximum drain distance of 40 meter (at a slope of 0,6%) during a violent rain. The ProPlay-Sport20D has smaller drainage channels and is the 'shock and drainage' pad for areas where less (violent) rainfall is expected. Because the drainage channels have an influence on the stiffness of the pad, the density of both 'shock and drainage' pads is slightly modified.

Pitch heating
Most shock pads are thermal insulators and when they are installed over a heating system, they prevent the heat from entering the turf. This can be solved with the ProPlay heating pad (ProPlay-HP); whether it is a liquid heating system (with pipes) or an electrical heating system (with ribbons). The ProPlay-HP is equipped with channels on top of the pad, that fit the pipes or the ribbons. Now the thermal insulation of the pad is a benefit, because all the heat will go up into the turf. The typical construction of ProPlay strongly reduces heating the soil below.

The dimensions of the channels and the design of the pad, depend on the heating system. However, in most cases one of our two standard pads can be applied. Both pads can be equipped with drainage channels as well.
